When people hear that the book is based on my real floppy eared German Shepherd dog (GSD), Logan, they often think that almost the entire story is based on facts. The biggest misconception about the words 'based on' is that I adopted Logan like the little girl does in the book, but in actual FACT, I paid a lot of money for him from a registered GSD breeder. Find out what else is fact or fiction below!
FACT
Logan did come from a big family - he was from a littler of 10!
FICTION
German Shepherd pups are actually born with floppy ears, and they stay floppy until around 5 months old, or when they stop teething. But to suit the narrative that Logan looks different to his family as a puppy (and not 2 years old as he was when I started drafting the story), I needed to change facts and make the other pups have their ears up at such a young age.
FICTION
Logan was born in November during spring and was ready to go to his forever home with me in December during summer. I changed the seasons in the book to autumn because I thought it allowed for a warm and rustic colour palette, and using only one season kept the narrative neat.
FACT
Well, obviously Logan didn't really put his floppy ear through a toilet roll, but the idea for this page came from my mum, who when she was a little girl owned a Corgi who also had a floppy ear (don't worry, she knows how crazy it is that she has had two dogs in her life with a floppy ear). She had the Corgi's floppy ear operated on to help it stand up and the vet suggested she put it through a toilet roll while it healed.
FICTION
This is a common misconception from the book. Logan wasn't born on a farm. The breeder lived up on a hill in Flowerdale, Victoria. The surrounding area is more like bushland, with a lot of winding roads.
FICTION
Logan didn't wait at all. I chose him when he was around 4-6 weeks old when all the pups were still being chosen by people, and I picked him up to take him home at around 8-10 weeks old. There were pups still waiting to go home on that same day! He wasn't "the last puppy waiting".
FICTION
This is the biggest misconception of all - that I adopted Logan just like the little girl does. I actually spent months trying to find a GSD breeder before I found the one I bought Logan from. Logan cost $1,800! Read 'Looking for Logan' to find out about my long and crazy experience to owning him.
FACT
Well everyone get's this one right! I did have Katrina Fisher (the illustrator) model the little girl after me when I was little. I sent her photos of me at age 6 with my short bob and fringe.
But, I didn't wear glasses until I was 15 years old - I just thought it was a sweet idea that if Logan has something unique about him (the floppy ear) the little girl does too (her "very big glasses").
